What is a Dental Hygienist deep cleaning?

A deep cleaning will help to remove what brushing alone cannot. Using special tools and instruments, dental hygienists remove plaque and tartar from hard to reach areas. They also buff and polish the teeth to remove surface staining. A deep cleaning will protect your teeth from decay and gum disease.

Our dental hygienists are an essential part of the Armytage Implant & Dental Clinic team. They provide expert care and support to patients of all ages. They are also essential for oral cancer screening and spotting the early signs of decay. Nervous patients may find a trip to the dental hygienist less daunting.

  • Eliminate bad breath
  • Improve oral health
  • Oral cancer screening
  • Prevent gum disease
  • Remove surface stains
  • Personalised advice

Regular dental hygienist appointments can improve your oral health and help to prevent decay. We recommend visiting the dental hygienist for a deep cleaning 1-2 times per year.

How often you need to visit the hygienist will be determined by clinical requirements. During your next routine checkup, ask your dentist for advice on how often you need to visit the dental hygienist. Every dental hygienist appointment is customised to your clinical requirements, so this might include:

  • Removing plaque and tartar with special tools
  • AirFlow treatment to remove surface stains
  • Advice on caring for your teeth at home
  • Specialist support for orthodontic or implant patients

What is Airflow Stain Removal?

AirFlow Stain Removal is an enhanced hygienist procedure that removes more surface staining than traditional scale and polish techniques. It uses a high-powered jet of water, sodium bicarbonate and air to clean the surface of your tooth enamel. It is a pain-free and highly effective way to clean and protect your teeth. It does not use any chemicals, so there is no risk of burning your gums or damaging your teeth.

AirFlow is an excellent choice for anyone considering cosmetic dentistry procedures such as teeth straightening or whitening. Some patients find that the whitening effects of the AirFlow treatment are sufficient alone, while others will opt to enhance the results with in-office or at-home treatments.

Does a scale and polish hurt?

No, the treatment should not be painful. If you experience any pain during your visit, your hygienist can use a numbing gel to make you more comfortable. After the treatment, your teeth and gums may feel more sensitive than usual, so it is best to avoid very hot or very cold food and drink the day of your appointment.

Does a scale and polish whiten your teeth?

Many patients notice a change in the brightness of their teeth following a hygienist appointment, particularly when AirFlow polishing is used. A dental hygienist deep cleaning removes plaque, tartar and surface stains from your teeth. It will not change the colour of the tooth, but it can make them appear brighter if you have any surface staining.

Is Airflow Stain Remover painful?

Airflow Stain remover is a pain free way to remove tooth staining and detox your mouth, it is kind to the tooth surface and can significantly improve tooth brightness. After only one session your teeth will feel cleaner than ever before.

Is scale and polish free on the NHS?

If your dentist says scaling is clinically required, this is available on the NHS. This can be provided by a hygienist or dental therapist. If your dentist says a scale and polish is not clinically necessary but you want one anyway, you will have to pay for it privately.

How often should you have your teeth cleaned?

It’s a good idea to have your teeth professionally cleaned once or twice per year. By attending a routine check up every 6 months and a hygienist appointment every 6 months, you will ensure your oral health is protected.

Can I see a dental hygienist without seeing the dentist?

If you would like to book an NHS scale and polish, you will need to be referred by your dentist. For a private hygienist appointment, including AirFlow treatments, you can book directly without a referral.
