Signs That You Need to Visit an Emergency Dentist
It can be difficult to know what is a dental emergency and what can wait until your dentist can fit you in for a routine appointment. We often hear from patients who have allowed dental problems to become quite painful and uncomfortable because they are worried about making a fuss.
So first and foremost, if you are in pain, you should treat this as a dental emergency. Dental pain can stop you from getting a good night’s sleep and it can make it difficult to concentrate at work or at school. If you find that you cannot control your dental pain, it’s always best to make an emergency dentist appointment so you can find out what is wrong.
There are many other signs that you should be aware of that you need to make an emergency dentist appointment. So, if you’re worried you’re making a fuss about nothing, read on to learn some of the situations where we would absolutely like to see you sooner rather than later.
If you’re in pain
Dental pain is the first sign of an emergency that you absolutely should not ignore. You might experience dental pain in lots of different ways. It could come on suddenly, or it might only be felt when you are eating or putting pressure on your tooth or gum.
If your dental pain is keeping you awake at night, if it’s making it difficult to concentrate during the day, and if over-the-counter pain medication doesn’t help make it go away, then you need to see an emergency dentist.
If your pain is accompanied by swelling, this is another reason you should get to the dentist as quickly as possible as this indicates an infection.
If you’ve had an extraction or surgery and the bleeding won’t stop
After dental surgery such as a tooth extraction, you will be given instructions to help stop any bleeding that might happen during recovery. You will typically need to bite down on a piece of gauze and wait for the bleeding to stop. If this doesn’t help, then you need to return to your dentist as quickly as possible.
If you’ve knocked out a tooth
Sporting injuries or a clumsy fall could lead you to knock out a tooth. If you can, hold on to the tooth and visit your dentist for an emergency appointment. If quick enough, there is a chance we could restore your knocked out tooth.
It’s also a good idea to have an X-ray to check the health of your jaw and make sure there isn’t any damage that isn’t immediately obvious.
If you’ve lost a dental restoration
If you have a crown, bridge, veneer or denture that comes loose or is broken, you should visit the emergency dentist to get help and advice. If your tooth has been restored with a crown, bridge or veneer, then the tooth below will have been prepared for this treatment.
If the restoration comes loose and falls off, the tooth below will be exposed and more likely to be damaged. Not to mention, your bite will also be affected. It’s vital to visit the dentist to get your dental restoration reattached or repaired so that you don’t suffer further damage.
If you lose a filling, you should also visit the dentist as soon as possible. If you leave this and forget about it, you run the risk of dental decay returning and developing into an abscess.
